Consumer Directed Care Seminar

2017 AHSRI Seminar Series

Consumer directed care - A new policy direction in aged and disability care: challenges and opportunities

Presented by Senior Professor Kathy Eagar
Wednesday 16 August 2017, 12:30 – 1:30pm
AHSRI, Seminar Room, Innovation Campus, University of Wollongong

A key tenant of consumer directed care is that the consumer decides on the services they need / want and who should provide those services. This gives the consumer greater control and also aims to encourage them to take greater personal responsibility for their care. This is only possible if funding is allocated to the person requiring services. The policy also assumes the consumer can (and wants to) make informed choices and that a market place of services exists that the consumer can choose from.

In this seminar, Senior Professor Kathy Eagar will discuss the policy implications of consumer directed care arising from initiatives such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme, the national aged care strategy, and public mental health services. Strategic opportunities will be identified across these consumer directed care initiatives for health and community care providers and researchers working in aged and disability care.
